What is a BioBlitz?
WHAT IS A BIOBLITZ? A BioBlitz is designed as part contest, part festival, part educational event, and an important scientific endeavor. During a BioBlitz a catalog is made of the total biodiversity via a species list, such as, all the bat species found or all of the invertebrates found. Knowing the number and diversity of species in a given area helps us understand the ecosystems that sustain the clean water, air, and healthy soils that we all enjoy. BIODIVERSITY: Often we hear the word "biodiversity" used in reference to the tropical rainforests. In fact, the diversity of life in our own backyards and wild places like Montana's grasslands is phenomenal. It is necessary to understand such complexity as the foundation for healthy ecosystems. Bioblitzes help increase our knowledge of the diversity of life in a localized area. WHY BIOBLITZ? A BioBlitz is a great opportunity to increase our knowledge about the biodiversity that exists in a specific area and to generate public awareness and interest from scientists, researchers and volunteers. |
